What Is The Best Paint for A Bathroom?

The Best Paint for A Bathroom

Recently we were hired to repaint a bathroom ceiling for a customer who had continuous problems with peeling paint in her bathroom. It may be as simple as having had three teenagers who all loved taking long steaming hot showers everyday or even twice a day. There are a couple of important considerations about bathroom ceilings; but, lets talk paint first!

I for one love the look and feel of flat and matte finishes; however, they are poor choices to to cover a bathroom ceiling. You should paint your bathroom (and walls for that matter) with eggshell, or saturn. You can learn more about sheens at our earlier blog post e blog post Look & Feel? What About Durability?

Many companies have specific paints designed for bathrooms or high humidity areas such as rooms with hot tubs or steam showers. You can use the specialized wall paint on the ceilings but most people prefer the a more refined softer white ceiling. Your best option is to purchase high quality eggshell or saturn paint and just ask the professional to flattest looking white color. This will usually be a pure white with a little blue grey tint to flatten reflective light.

There are some important steps when repainting bathroom ceilings, especially where there is water damage, staining, mildew or mold. What should you do if the ceiling is wet and the wallboard surface is damaged from moisture?

  • Step One: you should dry out the room with heaters for several days and then clean the ceiling with a mild household cleaner and remove all loose and peeling paint. This is a good time to repair any defects in the ceiling with joint compound.

  • Step Two: and then apply an oil-based cover stain such as Zinsser or Kilz over the entire ceiling and the top inch of the walls. This oil-based cover stain will prevent any future moisture from penetrating the wallboard as well as permanently cover any water stains.

  • Step Three: After the cover stain has dried (1 day) apply one coat of the white eggshell or saturn paint using a 3/8 or 1/2 nap roller and let dry for 4-6 hours. Take the wet roller and soak it in fresh paint then wrap it up air tight in plastic - it will remain wet and in perfect condition for weeks!

  • Step Four: Apply a second coat of the white eggshell or saturn paint the the ceiling. Inspect for evenness and consistency and clean up . You are done !

Properly drying, cleaning, repairing and applying an oil-based cover stain before the eggshell or saturn topcoat will guarantee you years of durability and moisture resistance.
